Alf W. Brandt, Commissioner
Alf W. Brandt develops courses for judges on water, the environment, and judicial independence, as Associate Director of Justice Solutions and Innovation at The National Judicial College (NJC). Brandt joined the college full-time in 2023, after more than 30 years working in all three branches of government, and at all three levels (federal, state, and local). He had worked part-time with NJC on its water education program since 2011.
Most recently, Brandt served as General Counsel to California State Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon, who he served for more than a decade. As Counsel to the Speaker, he addressed a wide range of Assembly organizational issues, including transparency and disruptive protesters, and issues of the state judiciary. Brandt worked for almost 19 years in the Assembly, developing, analyzing and advocating for California water legislation. He played a leading role in the development and/or passage of California’s landmark water legislation. He has spoken at countless conferences, particularly for the ABA environmental section.
Brandt received his JD from UC Berkeley and his BA magna cum laude in political science from UCLA.
